More than a stay, the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois offers an intense experience, full of historical and rich details in the artistic city of Basel (Switzerland).

Situated on the left hand of river Rhine, it's considered one of Switzerland's oldest hotels. It was originally built in 1681 and its name means "The Three Kings" in French.

At my arrival, I was welcomed with a red rose, small chocolate pastries and a "Oh, everything in your room is complimentary, so feel free to enjoy yourself".

It's the little things that make a big difference for me, and I must say that in this hotel the service truly was impeccable.

My first night I felt asleep watching "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" ( watch it if you wanna boost your WANDERLUST ;) on the biggest tv screen I've ever seen. I woke up to an enchanted, snowy view of Basel.

During my stay the staff was always very helpful and happy to show me around. I also got a personal tour in which I visited the hotel's most ancient and exclusive suites.

The hotels' features include a gym, an exclusive bar and a breakfast room's with an incredible view on the river Rhine.

The breakfast here was something else. Living such a frenetic life, this was exactly what I needed: to sit back and admire a stunning view while savoring the yummiest waffles ever. I had such an enlightening experience that I decided to share it all on my Instagram (click here to read!).

Bits of history:

- Napoleon Bonaparte once stopped here on his way back to France to "discuss French-Swiss relations". The room were he had lunch with the Swiss officials has now been renamed "Napoleon's room" in his honor.

- Theodor Herzl laid here the foundation stone for the State of Israel during his stay in 1897. He has a suite named after his name as well. For this reason, the hotel is frequently visited by Jewish travelers.

- Celebrities who were hosted by the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois include the Dalai Lama, Picasso, Joyce, Chagall, Dickens, Queen Elizabeth II, Sartre, Voltaire and many others.

What about food?

The Grand Hotel Les Trois hosts two highly rewarded restaurants: The Brasserie, 14 Gault Millau points, and the Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl, which boasts 3 stars in the Guide Michelin and 19 Gault Millau points.

At my departure the hotel gifted me with a delicious home-made pineapple and mango jam. You surely learnt the way to my heart ;)

I was hosted as a guest of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, but all the opinions expressed in this article are, as always, my own.
